Whether you are new to acupuncture or simply new to my practice, you probably have questions – and that is completely normal. I have put together the answers to the things I am most commonly asked, so you know exactly what to expect before you arrive. If there is anything else on your mind, please do get in touch.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. It has been practised for thousands of years and is increasingly well supported by research, particularly for pain, stress, and hormonal conditions. In my practice, acupuncture is always combined with massage within the same session – so you get the benefits of both in one treatment.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people are surprised by how comfortable it is. The needles are extremely fine – much finer than the needles used for injections – and the sensation is usually described as a mild tingling, warmth, or a dull ache around the point. Many patients find the treatment deeply relaxing and some fall asleep. If anything feels uncomfortable at any point, I will always adjust.
How does acupuncture work?
From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, acupuncture works by regulating the flow of Qi (energy) through pathways in the body called meridians. From a Western perspective, research shows it can influence the nervous system, reduce inflammation, regulate hormones, and help shift the body out of fight-or-flight and into rest-and-digest – the state where real healing happens. I am happy to talk through either framing, or both, depending on what makes sense to you.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. When carried out by a qualified practitioner using sterile, single-use needles, acupuncture is very safe. I am fully qualified and insured, and all needles are sterile and single-use. I am a registered member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), which means I meet rigorous standards of training, safety, and professional conduct.
What are your qualifications?
I hold a first-class BSc (Hons) in Acupuncture from the University of Portsmouth, where I trained at the London College of Traditional Acupuncture. Since graduating I have completed extensive postgraduate training, including specialist study in gynaecology, fertility, and IVF support. I am also a qualified Integrated Fertility Coach, hold a Pregnancy Massage Diploma, and have trained in Auricular Acupuncture and Battlefield Acupuncture.
I am a registered member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), the Professional Standards Authority (PSA), and the British Medical Acupuncture Society (BMAS). I am also listed on the BAcC Mentoring-Supervision Register, reflecting my involvement in the professional development of other acupuncturists.
How long have you been practising?
I have been running Stacey Chapman Acupuncture for over 15 years, seeing more than 20 patients each week from my clinic in Palmers Green and Southgate, North London.
Do you supervise or mentor other practitioners?
Yes. Alongside my clinical work, I offer professional supervision and mentoring for acupuncturists and complementary therapists. I completed formal supervision training in 2020 and am listed on the BAcC Register of Mentors and Supervisors. I have spoken at British Acupuncture Council events and appeared on the Qiological Podcast.
What makes your approach different?
Every session combines acupuncture and massage – you do not have to choose between them. I also bring a coaching-informed approach to each treatment, which means I take time to help you understand what is happening in your body and why. Rather than following a fixed protocol, I work collaboratively with you – adapting the treatment to where you are right now and what your body needs. The goal is not just symptom relief, but a deeper sense of understanding and control over your own health.
Why do you combine acupuncture and massage in every session?
This is something I have developed and refined over many years of practice. Acupuncture and massage complement each other well – massage helps the body soften and release physical tension before and during the needling, and together they are more effective at helping the nervous system shift from fight-or-flight into rest-and-digest. That is the state where the body can do the work it needs to do. Rather than offering them as separate treatments, combining them within a single session means you get deeper, more integrated care every time you come.
What conditions do you treat?
My practice specialises in women’s health, including:
- Fertility support (natural conception and alongside IVF)
- Hormonal conditions (PCOS, endometriosis, irregular cycles, period pain, PMDD)
- Perimenopause and menopause
- Pregnancy support and birth preparation
- Postnatal recovery
- Stress, anxiety, and sleep difficulties
- Headaches and migraines
- Autoimmune conditions
I also see a smaller number of patients with musculoskeletal and neurological conditions, including sciatica and trigeminal neuralgia. If you are unsure whether acupuncture might help with your specific situation, please get in touch and I will be honest with you about whether I think I can help.
Do you see male patients?
Yes, though the majority of my patients are women. I see male patients via referral, primarily for fertility support along side their partners musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.
Where are you based?
My practice is home-based in Southgate, North London (N14), on the border of Palmers Green and Southgate, near Broomfield Park. The full address is provided on booking. I see patients from across Palmers Green, Southgate, Winchmore Hill, Enfield, Bounds Green, Arnos Grove, Oakwood, Wood Green, Edmonton, Bush Hill Park, and the wider North London area.
Is there parking?
Yes – there is free parking in the driveway (if available) and along local roads with no restrictions. Please note there is no access to Conway Road from Fox Lane; approach via Green Lanes, Cannon Hill, or Aldermans Hill.
The nearest Underground station is Southgate (Piccadilly line), which is a 20 to 30 minute walk or a short bus ride. Palmers Green rail station is approximately 10 minutes’ walk, with regular services to Finsbury Park and Moorgate.
Bus routes serving the area include the 329 (Green Lanes), 121 and W6 (Aldermans Hill), and 121 and 299 (Cannon Hill).
Is the clinic accessible?
My treatment rooms are on the first floor and require use of the stairs. If you have a mobility difficulty, please contact me before booking so we can discuss your options.
What happens at my first appointment?
Your first appointment is 90 minutes. We will start with a full case history – I will ask you about your main concern, your general health, lifestyle, and what you are hoping acupuncture might help with. From there, we will put together a treatment plan and you will have your first treatment in the same session. You do not need to prepare anything in advance, though it helps to arrive having eaten something and wearing comfortable, loose clothing.
What happens at follow-up appointments?
Follow-up appointments are 60 minutes and combine acupuncture and massage. Each session, I will check in on how you have been since we last met and adapt the treatment accordingly.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on your condition and what you are hoping to achieve. As a general guide, I recommend weekly sessions for the first four to six weeks, then we review together and often move to fortnightly as things improve. Some patients continue on a maintenance basis once their main concern has resolved. I will always give you an honest picture of what to expect – I do not recommend sessions you do not need.
Do I need to do anything special before or after a session?
Before: eat a light meal, avoid alcohol, and wear comfortable clothing. After: drink plenty of water and try to allow yourself some quiet time if you can – many people feel deeply relaxed after a session.
Can acupuncture help with fertility?
Acupuncture is increasingly well supported by research as a complement to both natural conception and assisted fertility treatment such as IVF. It can help regulate hormones, improve blood flow to the reproductive organs, reduce stress, and support overall hormonal balance. I want to be clear: I cannot guarantee outcomes, and acupuncture is not a replacement for medical fertility treatment. What I can offer is genuinely supportive care – practical, evidence-informed, and tailored to where you are in your journey.
Can I have acupuncture alongside IVF?
es. Many of my patients come to me specifically for support alongside IVF. Research supports the use of acupuncture during IVF cycles, and many patients find it helpful for managing both the physical and emotional demands of treatment. I am experienced in timing sessions around IVF protocols and will work alongside your fertility clinic’s recommendations.
I am going through IVF – when should I start?
Ideally, I would recommend starting acupuncture at least two to three months before an IVF cycle begins, as this gives time to support your overall health and prepare your body. That said, I see patients at all stages – including those who come to me mid-cycle or at transfer – and there is still benefit to be had at any point. If you are already mid-cycle and wondering whether it is too late, please just get in touch.
I have been trying to conceive for a while and I am finding it hard. Is acupuncture right for me?
That is a question I take seriously. If you have been trying for a while, I would want to understand your full picture before making any promises. What I can say is that acupuncture offers a space that is genuinely supportive – somewhere to come that is not clinical or pressured, where you can have an hour that is just for you. Many of my fertility patients find that the sessions give them a sense of control at a time when so much feels out of their hands. If you would like to talk it through before booking, please do get in touch.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book online via the website or get in touch directly by email or phone. If you are not sure whether acupuncture is right for you, I am always happy to have a brief conversation first.
